WTS Handles First Export Coal Cargo


WTS just completed loading it’s first export coal cargo on the M/V Podhale destined for Turkey. The coal came out of the Buchanan Mine in Virginia and originally arrived in Providence on the US flag vessel the M/V Energy Enterprise. WTS has been aggressively going after export coal in an effort to expand the export capacity of the US East Coast. ProvPort Receives $10.5 Million Federal Grant


The Port of Providence has received $10.5 million in federal stimulus funding through the Department of Transportation’s TIGER II program. The money will be used to help purchase two mobile harbor cranes, which will be mounted on barges. The new cranes will replace the existing cranes at the port which are over 30 years old and rented from an out of state company. This funding will allow ProvPort and WTS to operate more efficiently and safely moving into the future.

New Security Measures at WTS/ProvPort


Representitives from the City of Providence recently announced the installation of a new chemical detection system at the Port of Providence. This project will be funded by a $593,000 Homeland Security Grant, and will be tied in to the port’s video survelliance and communications network, known as RICOP.

In an article for Providence Business News, Pete Gaynor, of the Providence Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) highlighted the involvement of ProvPort and WTS staff, stating that, “RICOP would not be possible without public-private partnerships such as the one between Providence and ProvPort Inc.”

June ‘09 - a feasibility study is currently being conducted to determine if the Port of Providence is a suitable location for a wind turbine and solar panels to supplement our current power requirements. Study results are expected by the end of summer.

$3.5 million dollar capital improvements

Recent capital improvements at the port have been completed improving the overall facility for our entire customer base creating a more efficient and productive facility. These improvements include:

1. Paving over 20 acres in both the open lay-down storage area and on 3500 linear feet of pier space.
2. Reconditioning the 130,000 square foot Ace Warehouse including a new roof.
3. Replacing 1700 linear feet of rail line along outer pier face.

We will always continue to work to maintain the port as New England’s premier deep water multimodal facility for international and domestic trade.
